‘New Beginnings’
Subject Matter:
Leading up to this project stress had been killing my creativity. This picture holds a lot of meaning for me. It was the literal closing of a door to my previous life before getting into my car and driving to my new life.
This semester in school was my first one back since high school. This is the very last project I am handing in for the first semester of the next stage of my life. Even though pieces of my previous life keep creeping up and I keep having to reclose that door.
Creating this piece felt right, it felt important. It was hard and I hated this piece first starting out, but as I spent more time with it, it fell into place.
We all have those times where we close a door whether literal or figurative. We have to close that door on our previous life to start fresh.
There was no other choice for this piece for me. The moment the new beginning truly started.
Technique:
For this piece I used charcoal. I was going to try and use painted graphite, but since I’ve never used that process before I wanted to use a medium I was comfortable with.
I really love working with and the look of charcoal, so I will continue to use it. However, I will try some new techniques in the future maybe with a paint brush next time.
