Baking In Motion – Project Proposal

1.  Concept + Format Explanation                                                               

This video will explore baking as a playful form of visual storytelling. Methods will include split-screen and stop-motion. The concept will focus on the process of a teenager baking cookies, following him as he prepares ingredients, mixes the dough, shapes the cookies, and places them in the oven. Multiple split-screen frames will appear simultaneously to show the different stages of the baking process happening at once. After the baking, it will switch to a LEGO figure sneaking up to the finished plate of cookies and stealing some bites. This will create a sense of rhythm and visual movement. The mood for this piece is warm, playful, and slightly whimsical. This will be achieved through bright lighting, quick cuts, and energetic pacing that mirrors the excitement of baking. Split-screen editing will be used to edit the clips to show the process. Stop Motion animation will be incorporated to introduce the additional LEGO character.

Post-Production Techniques I plan to use are:

  • Split-Screen editing – multiple frames brought together to follow movement and give a full feel of the whole baking process.
  • Stop-Motion Animation will be used to add some humour to the experience and to end it on a fun note ‘Lego Cookie Heist’. This also adds another layer of complexity as stop motion can be tricky to work with.
  • Sound  – Playing with sound to get a good feeling for the mood of the whole piece. Real sounds, with music to match each mood, the gearing up, the process, the finale and the heist.

The work should last approx.. 1.5 – 2 mins in total.

2. Technical Resources

Stage 1 – Production (Shooting)

  • Camera: Smartphone, iPhone 16 Pro
  • Tripod some shots & walking film to capture movement and be able to come in and out as the scene needs
  • Kitchen with natural lighting
  • Baking ingredients: flour, sugar, butter eggs, etc.
  • Baking tools: bowl, mixer, measuring spoons, etc.
  • Lego figure
  • Plate of finished cookies for the Heist

Stage 2 – Postproduction (editing)

  • Video editing software: Premiere Pro
  • Stop Motion software: Stop Motion Studio
  • Split screen editing
  • Stop motion edits
  • Found sound effects and music: royalty free – ex. pixabay or freesound.org

Stage 3 – Exhibition (the show)

  • Final export
  • WordPress site: upload location
  • Brightspace: submission

3. Project timeline:

  • Mar 24: Pre-Production Planning
  • Mar 27-28 – Live Action Filming
  • Mar 29-20 – Stop-Motion Filming
  • Week of Mar 31 – Rough cut assembly
  • Apr 9 – Final review and export
