Out for a family walk – by Tiffany D

This was a lot of fun to develop and I found with time at my desk and endless repeats of every little section of the piece I have grown more and more attached to it.

This is a piece that came from going on a trail walk with my kids and our family dog. We enjoy going to the trail together and the three of them all going up and down the whole time. Running, giggling, throwing sticks, and just enjoying their time together.

Firstly, I recorded the walk and multiple clips of different sounds from when we were out there. Trying to pay attention to the different sounds we make during the outing and then either recording them or finding them. I did find some of my recorded sounds weren’t as clean as I would’ve liked. The cars passing that sounded, as Jason mentioned in feedback, like they were going through a tunnel. I tried to clean up those sounds as much as I could and when I couldn’t without damaging the track I would add some coverup, clearer sounds from sites like Pixabay.

Also, in feedback it was brought up that you can’t really hear our dog, which is very true she isn’t a barker (thank goodness). However, it does present a challenge to be able to hear her in the piece and at the same time keep it authentic to what this event truly sounded like. I’m a bit of a purest in that way. I didn’t add any barking just because she does it so infrequently. She does however shake and wears a metal collar. I found some dog sounds that felt like they would fit with the piece and still give the dogs part a bit more weight.

I think I will end up keeping this project for a long time to come. As a mom, I’ve watched time speed up around the growth of my children and having this little snapshot of our life and time together before they grow up and leave the nest was really special to create.
