Emerging Forms of Togetherness

IDEATION + RESEARCH | PREPARATION | PRODUCTION – PHOTOGRAPHY (SHOT LIST)

For this project I’ve chosen ‘Emerging forms of Togetherness’ although after some thought my subject matter almost crosses over borders of each option. Return to water could also be seen as returning to nourishment, returning home. You can’t survive without water.

My subject matter for this assignment is my home and kids. During the last 3 years my kids and myself have all gotten closer in ways I hadn’t expected. My kids lost care outside of myself in a couple of ways, one being quite personal and painful. Not a death, but sometimes feels that way. Sometimes peoples choices can feel as painful as a death. However, as hard as it was in the beginning it has turned out really beautifully for us. My kids became closer and more tolerant of each other (mostly, they are still siblings). When you lose basically all outside care you really have to pull together.

Together in the same home can be together or just in the presence of each other. I have tried to get shots of what life looks like in this new world we have all found ourselves in. Online classes that weren’t as widely available. Time together in the same house, but independent. Games and compromise. Getting along and the moods that sometimes brings.

Not totally sure how to tell the story of all of that, but we are perfectly imperfect and I will try to tell what I can.

Mar 29 – Work in Progress

Today I added another set of photos. Working on some basic edits and then bulk editing where possible. I’m trying to figure out now which ones to include for the final 6-10 photos.

My process – I have been taking a bunch, adding them to the collection for the project, editing them all or at least most and then sit and go through them one by one and whittle down my favourites. I whittle them down over a couple different sweeps of all the shots and then the final collection. I find going over my final choices more than once helps me really pick my favorites. Doing this process over a couple of days, I always find there are certain ones I’m constantly drawn back to.

Apr 3 – Work in Progress

Tonight I got the edits done on my final photos and organized my power point presentation. I’m really happy with how all the shots turned out and how the presentation came together. I’m nervous about creating the video part with narration over, but all in all this has been a good project. Stopping to take pictures has helped pull my brain out of overthinking mode and helped me to be more present during the process. I’m excited to keep moving forward with all of this over the summer when there are a few less balls trying to balance on the ever tipping tray.
