Unit 2 – Photography Assignment & Workflow
To be honest I have really struggled mentally with this units project. Getting very stuck in my head of what it “should” look like or what I wanted to capture. I’m generally not drawn to still life and after having 2D drawing last term have a specific idea of what still like should look like. After a conversation with Angela I was finally able to wrap my head around what I wanted to capture for this.
Originally I had the idea of a cup of tea and maybe incorporating books into it somehow as I’m a big reader, but was unsure if that would be considered ‘food’. So, while I still think that would’ve hit the mark as books are food for your brain and having a cup of hot tea and sitting with a good book I feel is food for the soul I have gone a different way.
My daughters bday is coming up next week and I had planned to make homemade brownies with her. I didn’t originally think I could use this as an opportunity to complete this project and capture the memories all at once, since it’s not technically still life after the discussion with Angela I have come to realize that some shots may not be, but others can be and capturing the whole process of cooking with my favourite tiny hands is exactly what I wanted to capture and share for this unit.
Today I grabbed some of the ingredients for a couple of beginning shots and while I have to wait a couple of days to complete this assignments due to time restrictions I wanted to start getting some shots done and the lighting in my kitchen this morning was just perfect for this.
I didn’t use my tripod for these as the lighting still allowed me to be able to capture these free hand, but I do want to test out how that can work to my advantage once the baking begins.
I chose not to do too many edits to these shots as I really loved the softer colors that were captured by the natural lighting coming in from the windows. I did enhance some of the blacks and whites just to really make some of the pieces in the photograph pop a bit more and not look faded.
I’m really hoping to have another good lighting day in a few days when I’m able to capture the whole photoshoot with my kids baking these.
